【Famous Medical Practitioner's Heritage】Yi Ding's Letter of Apprenticeship

Respected Master Dr. Wu Mingjie,

In 2019, my mother fell gravely ill. Our entire family was gripped by fear and desperation, seeking medical help everywhere. By great fortune, through my cousin’ s introduction, I came to know you, Master, and was blessed by your compassionate heart in accepting my mother’s case and treating her with your healing hands.

During the process of her recovery, I personally witnessed a complete and profound system of Traditional Chinese Medicine in practice. You carefully prescribed herbal decoctions to strengthen her constitution; applied moxibustion and herbal foot baths to warm the meridians and support yang energy; used acupuncture to regulate qi and blood; employed massage to release muscle tension; and, with gentle words and philosophical insight, eased her emotional burdens.

I saw with my own eyes how my mother transformed—from furrowed brow to serene expression, from deep suffering and exhaustion to gradual peace and vitality. Such benevolence and skill are forever engraved in my heart. This experience allowed me to witness firsthand the power and wisdom of Chinese medicine in the face of serious illness, igniting in me a deep desire to study this ancient healing art.

During the time you have graciously allowed me to study under your guidance, you have shared your knowledge without reservation. You often sent me real clinical cases remotely for study, patiently explaining the deeper meanings of each herb and the subtle logic behind every formula. You once taught me: “When prescribing, first cast a stone to test the waters.” The human body is like a living landscape, ever-changing and complex; when faced with difficult or mixed conditions of deficiency and excess, one must never act rashly. A single herb—or a small combination—should be used as the “stone,” lightly cast into the system to observe how the pulse and symptoms respond. Once the disease pattern becomes clear, treatment should follow accordingly, combining pattern differentiation and treatment by

principle.

From the prudence of “testing the waters” to the mastery of “applying multiple methods in harmony,” you have not only given me fish but taught me how to fish. Your selfless teaching embodies the essence of “benevolent heart and skillful art” —a benevolence that shows compassion toward patients and lifts younger students with kindness; a skill that not only cures illness but awakens wisdom.

Under your guidance, I have begun to apply what I have learned to help people around me. When their ailments improve through Chinese medicine, I feel not only joy but also profound reverence—for you, my teacher, and for the sacred Dao of healing. This has strengthened my conviction that what you transmit is a true path that benefits humanity.

Today, before my fellow disciples, grandmasters, and senior mentors, I, Ding Yi, sincerely and respectfully present this apprenticeship pledge, earnestly requesting that you formally accept me as your disciple and allow me to enter your lineage.
